Introduction
The Christmas season is filled with joy, traditions, and celebrations worldwide. However, not all countries celebrate Christmas in the same way. Many celebrate December 25th as the birth of Jesus Christ.
In some cultures, the fun continues into January with Three Kings' Day. This important holiday, called Epiphany, is very significant in Spain and many Latin American countries.
What is Three Kings’ Day?
Three Kings’ Day, or Epiphany, is a Christian holiday. It celebrates the visit of the three wise men, known as the magi or the three kings, to baby Jesus.
The wise men—Melchior, Gaspar, and Balthazar—traveled from the East. They followed the star of Bethlehem. Their journey was to deliver precious gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh for the newborn Christ.
This journey lasted twelve days. It symbolizes Jesus' revelation to the Gentiles, known as the Epiphany. In some Christian traditions, Epiphany 2024 and each year after is a day for spiritual reflection.
It celebrates Christ's divine nature. In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, this day is called Theophany, which means “manifestation of God.”
Where is Three Kings’ Day Celebrated?
Three Kings’ Day is an important holiday in Spain and many Spanish-speaking countries. These include Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Puerto Rico. It is also celebrated in parts of Europe and the Philippines. During this time, people enjoy family gatherings, parades, and special traditions.
Three Kings' Day Traditions and Celebrations
The Three Kings' Day celebrations start on the evening of January 5th, called Three Kings’ Eve. On this night, towns and cities light up with colorful parades, known as Cabalgata de Reyes.
During these processions, the three kings ride on decorated floats. They toss small gifts, candies, and sweets to the eager crowd, especially kids. This grand spectacle is one of the season's most awaited events, attracting thousands of spectators.
For children, the three wise men play a role similar to Santa Claus in other cultures. Instead of writing letters to Santa, children write letters to the three kings, asking for gifts. On the night of January 5th, they leave their shoes out, hoping the three kings will fill them with presents by morning. Some families also leave food and water for the wise men and their camels, similar to leaving cookies and milk for Santa.
On January 6th, families wake up to gifts from the three kings. This day is filled with joyful gatherings. People exchange presents and enjoy traditional foods. One popular treat is the Roscon de Reyes.
It’s a round, sweet bread like brioche, topped with candied fruits and sugar. Inside the Roscon de Reyes, there’s a small figurine and a bean. The person who finds the figurine becomes the “king” or “queen” for the day. The one who finds the bean has to buy the Roscon next year!
Epiphany Holiday Around the World
Three Kings' Day is a significant holiday in Spain and Latin America. The Epiphany, however, varies in celebration around the world.
In Italy, kids can't wait for La Befana. She is a kind old witch who brings gifts on Epiphany Eve.
In France, people enjoy Galette des Rois, a flaky pastry cake with a hidden charm inside.
In Greece and Eastern Orthodox countries, Theophany features the Blessing of the Waters. Priests toss a cross into the sea, river, or lake. Then, young men jump in to retrieve it.
The Religious Meaning of The Epiphany
Epiphany is more than just celebrations and customs; it holds deep religious significance. The term comes from the Greek word "epiphaneia," which means "manifestation" or "appearance." It represents the revelation of Jesus Christ to the world.
Western Christians emphasize the visit of the three kings. In contrast, Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River. This event, called Theophany, reveals Christ's divine nature.
